Germs, germs everywhere…

What’s a mom to do when she’s in the pursuit of winter wellness?

Aside from taking a few simple steps like the ones I talked about in my last post on How To Boost Your Immune System, every mom everywhere can do this one super easy task to help her family in the war against germs…

and teach your family to wash regularly as well.

that’s it,

                its that easy…

                                      …BUT is it really?

Proper sanitation and good hygiene are extremely important in supporting your immune system and staying healthy. Hand washing is one of the easiest things you can do to STOP the spread of germs and maintain your winter wellness. However, the soap you choose really CAN make a difference. Antibacterial hand soaps containing triclosan and synthetic fragrances are bad news when it comes to your family’s health!

Triclosan has been shown to cause:

* Abnormalities with the endocrine system, particularly with thyroid function
* Weakening of the immune system
* Birth defects
* Contaminated drinking water
* Increased allergies
* A rise in the development of antibiotic-resistant germs

As you can see, there are a few things to consider when it comes to choosing what product you use to clean your hands. Not only do most conventional soaps and hand cleaning products contain triclosan, they also contain skin-irritating chemicals like Sodium Lauryl Sulfates and chemical-laden fragrances that can cause rashes as well as skin allergies. Boy am I familiar with this! My hands have actually bled after using public bathroom soap.

I have the most sensitive hands ever! About 5 years ago I developed eczema on my hands. It comes and goes, but gets pretty bad during the winter months. Every time my hands get wet, especially with soap, it aggravates my skin like you wouldn’t believe. For years I have avoided washing my hands if and when possible. I know, GROSS, right?! But a girl’s gotta do, what a girl’s gotta do. When faced with the choice of dirty hands or bleeding hands, what would you do?

Change is good

When I started my journey with Young Living almost 2 years ago, I began making my own foaming hand soap. This has been such a game changer for me. I noticed a huge difference in my skin and, most importantly, I was no longer afraid to wash my hands (at home at least)! Since I can’t bring my hand soap with me everywhere I go (although I will confess that I did take it with me on my last vacation), I now make my own Thieves and aloe hand purifying spray. Everyone in my family loves this spray. It smells amazing and is gentle on my sensitive skin.

Hand Purifying Spray recipe

On-the-Go Hand Purifying Spray

2oz glass spray bottle
5 drops Thieves blend
5 drops Lemon or Orange oil
4tsp. Organic Witch Hazel (like this one)
4 tsp. Aloe Vera Gel (like this one)
1/8 tsp. Vitamin E oil
Fill rest with distilled water.

Don’t have time to make your own on-the-go purifying spray? No need to worry. Young Living has this amazingly powerful and awesomely gentle Thieves Hand Purifier (order yours here). This is the only hand-cleansing product I have bought that doesn’t make my sensitive hands feel like they are burning. The best part is that a very little goes a long way, so this small bottle will last a long time!
